Night of the Living Dead

Night of the Living Dead

Directed by George A. Romero

Released 1968

The original and still amongst the best.

Loosely based on “I am Legend” by Richard Matheson and filmed for $114,000, it is thought to have made $30,000,000 since. This was Romero’s first feature, having made several shorts.

Compared to modern horror, it is hard to imagine that it was strongly criticized for its graphic content. Described at the time as an “Unrelieved Orgy of Sadism” it could probably be shown on daytime tv now. However, it is still utterly compelling and edge-of-the-seat scary.

The film has been tampered with, chopped about and re-released with scenes added and taken away.It has been dubbed, re-made twice (1990 and 2006 in 3D),and colourised. Differing editions have been released, soundtracks changed;all promising to be the ultimate print, and still the list goes on.

The version we are showing is the Millenium Edition.

Widely seen as the the closest to the original, with original soundtrack and with the edit having the blessing of George A Romero himself.
